Currently in its third generation, the BMW X5 has been a luxury SUV mainstay for over 20 years. The X5 gets a significant update for 2024, bringing new electrified powertrain technology with better power and updated interior tech with a curved display. Production will start in April 2023 at BMW’s Spartanburg, SC, factory.

BMW offers the 2024 X5 in four configurations, starting with the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) X5 sDrive40i and topping out with the powerful M60i xDrive model. All powertrains gain a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for 2024, and the M60i gets a brand-new turbocharged V8 engine, improving the X5’s zero-to-60-mph time to 4.2 seconds, according to BMW.

The 2024 X5 gets a facelift with a new kidney grille and updated headlights, which BMW says are narrower than before. An illuminated grille is available for select trims for the first time, turned on or off through the infotainment system. The lower air intake features horizontal trim, and the updated X5 comes with new air vents finished in chrome or black, depending on the model. An available M Sport package brings an exclusive front apron design, gloss black exterior trim, and trapezoidal tailpipe finishers.

The M60 features unique styling with M badging on the exterior. The mirrors feature high-gloss black trim, and a quad exhaust system highlights the rear end. BMW offers an M Sport Professional package with a matte black grille surround and black chrome exhaust pipes. The package also includes M Sport brakes with red or blue calipers.

Sport seats come standard in the refreshed X5, and BMW offers multi-contour seats with available ventilation and massage. Synthetic leather upholstery is standard and comes in several colors, including coffee, cognac, black, and more. A new ambient light bar highlights the dash offering 15 colors, selectable through the infotainment system.

The entry-level 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine gets an overhaul for 2024, delivering 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The mild-hybrid system temporarily boosts power to 398 pound-feet, enabling the all-wheel-drive xDrive40i model to deliver a claimed 5.2-second zero-to-60-mph time. The M60i gets a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 523 hp and 553 pound-feet of torque.

As part of the SUV’s update for 2024, BMW revised the xDrive50e model’s plug-in powertrain to provide better efficiency and power. Output is up to 483 hp and 516 pound-feet of torque, and the system returns an all-electric range of 40 miles on a 25.7-kWh battery. Though efficient, the powertrain offers solid acceleration and a claimed zero-to-60-mph time of 4.6 seconds.

Adaptive M suspension comes standard on the M60i and is optional for the 40i models. It features electronically controlled dampers and offers two stiffness settings. Available air suspension brings automatic self-leveling and lowers the SUV at speeds above 86 mph. The M60i now gets rear-wheel steering with three degrees of motion.

BMW offers several advanced driver aids on the 2024 X5, some of which it locks in its Driving Assistance packages. A new highway driving assist system comes in the Driving Assistance Professional package, offering hands-free driving at up to 85 mph. A reverse parking assistant is standard, enabling automated backing in specific situations. The available Maneuver Assistant feature uses GPS data and steering inputs to perform automated “routines” in particular locations. It stores driving inputs and can recall them later using location information.

The 2024 X5 comes with BMW’s latest iDrive 8 infotainment system. The interface offers voice and touch inputs, over-the-air updates, navigation, and more. It runs on a 14.9-inch touchscreen behind curved glass alongside the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. BMW says it designed the system to look and feel like using a smartphone, and configurable widgets allow quick and personalized interaction with the vehicle.

The updated BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant now offers more specific voice controls for things like opening the sunroof or changing climate settings. It can also proactively offer suggestions based on the driver’s previous behavior. Some models get an augmented view navigation feature that overlays directions and other information on a live camera view of the road in front of the SUV.

The BMW X5 competes in a seriously tough segment that includes the sporty Acura MDX, which buyers can outfit with a great twin-turbo V6. The Audi Q8 is another alternative that offers an opulent interior and lively performance, and the Mercedes-Benz GLE offers similar luxury and speed.
