Whether you’re bored with the same old – same old or are simply looking for more power, better handling, or a sportier look in your car, there are a variety of modifications out there to serve your needs.

Buying and installing aftermarket upgrades can become something of an addiction because of how fun it is. It’s sort of like the same fun that kids get from playing with legos. Sure, you may not be installing the parts yourself (although many do), but that doesn’t take away from the joy of tuning your car’s performance to the max.

Today, we are going to look at two powerful aftermarket upgrades that make a big difference to your car’s performance. Cold Air intakes and Superchargers / Turbochargers.

A cold air intake is designed to bring cooler air into the engine. The idea behind this is that cooler air is denser, which means it contains more oxygen molecules per unit of volume. The result is a more efficient combustion process, which can lead to improved engine performance and fuel efficiency.

A typical air intake system on a car is located in the engine bay, which can get hot due to the heat generated by the engine and other components. This can cause the air entering the engine to be hot and less dense, which can result in a less efficient combustion process. 

S&B cold air intake systems are quite popular as the company has been refining its products for over thirty years. Their systems, like most other cold air intakes, route the air intake away from the engine compartment, where the air is warmer, and into a location where the air is cooler, such as the front of the vehicle.

Air intake systems typically come in two main types: short ram and cold air. Short ram systems bring cooler air into the engine by routing the intake hose closer to the front of the vehicle. 

Cold air intake systems, on the other hand, bring in cool air from outside of the engine compartment by routing the intake hose through a filter that is located in a cooler area, such as the front grille of the car.

Installing a cold air intake can be a relatively simple process, but you do want to research the specific make and model of the car before making a purchase. 

These systems can provide a noticeable increase in horsepower and torque, as well as improved throttle response. Additionally, it can improve the sound of the engine and enhance the appearance of the engine bay.

Superchargers and turbochargers are two types of forced induction systems that are designed to increase the amount of air that enters the engine. This increase in air results in a corresponding increase in horsepower and torque. 

Both superchargers and turbochargers work on the principle of compressing the air that enters the engine, but they do so in different ways. A supercharger is a mechanical device that is driven by a belt connected to the engine’s crankshaft. 

It compresses the air before it enters the engine, which results in a denser air-fuel mixture that can burn more efficiently. Superchargers provide a consistent increase in power throughout the engine’s RPM range and can be installed relatively easily. 

A turbocharger, on the other hand, uses exhaust gases to power a turbine, which in turn drives a compressor that compresses the air before it enters the engine. Because the turbine is powered by exhaust gases, there is a slight delay, called “turbo lag,” before the full power of the turbocharger is realized. 

Turbocharged engines tend to have more power at high RPMs and provide a boost in power when the engine is spinning fast. Both superchargers and turbochargers can significantly increase horsepower and torque, but they each have their own unique set of characteristics and trade-offs. 

Superchargers tend to provide a more immediate and consistent power boost, while turbochargers tend to provide more power at high RPMs but with a slight delay. 

These modifications can have an impact on the vehicle’s emissions, fuel efficiency, and drivability, so you may need to check the laws and regulations in your area before installing one.

Also, we recommend that you consult with a trusted mechanic before making any upgrades to ensure that the modification is compatible with the car and it’s in line with your driving style and the usage of the vehicle.
